Does ionic serve also run the "gulp" command?

I have a few tasks I added to the default gulpfile.js but they don't seem to be working UNLESS I manually type "gulp" into the CLI. Is this normal? Or should Ionic CLI commands like "serve" be running my gulp tasks automatically?
